Woodworking on the Farm

Everything in our woodworking product catalog is HANDMADE, CUSTOMIZED, and PERSONALIZED works of art! No kidding!

I have been woodworking for more than 25 years. It is a therapy session each time I enter the woodshop. I love the smell of fresh cut wood and enjoy turning rough lumber into a beautiful piece of decor or functional item to be used around the home. When Karen and I started The Little Orchard Farm we focused our attention on sustainable food sources to both provide a healthy alternative to grocery store foods and to share with our community as we believe we are on the cusp of a food crisis in our country. The woodshop offerings is a way for us to support our dreams of building out our farm infrastructure. We believe the way to fund a farm is for the farm to generate revenue so we use the monies we receive from poultry sales, woodshop sales, and candle sales to continue to furnish our farm with fencing, animal housing, feed, and so forth.

Another interesting facet of our woodshop is the fact that most of lumber used in our items comes straight from our farm. Again, our farm supporting our farm concept. Each year storms take down a few trees around the farm and, in the past, we would saw these up and use them for firewood or simply burn them to rid them from the land. Then I got an idea. Why not use these beautiful cedar, pine, and oak trees to make works of art. So, we invested in a wood mill and began milling our own lumber. We now attempt to utilize every part of the tree. We mill the trunk of the tree for lumber, the branches are chipped to make fire starter logs and for garden paths, and the greenery is used to make wreaths. It is really amazing to see the full circle of land regeneration from an old tree providing revenue for newly purchased samplings to go into the ground. We have seen the Little Orchard get a little bigger through this process and it is really rewarding to know we are no longer sending felled trees to an unrewarding grave but instead seeing their beauty light up someone’s home and provide for our farm’s sustainability.
